Dementia-Friendly Aircraft Lavatory
An accessible and intuitive lavatory that promotes independence for persons living with dementia, while providing space for caregiver assistance.
Timeline: This eight-month capstone project was co-designed in collaboration with the National Research Council’s Centre for Air Travel Research (CATR), Ottawa International Airport, Bruyère Hospital and Chartwell Retirement Residences.
This participatory design project was focused on improving
the air travel experience for persons living
with dementia and their caregivers by increasing the
accessibility and inclusivity of that environment.
Initial Design Research
Throughout this capstone project, I conducted user research by collaborating with those who were impacted by the problem and co-designing solutions. This included going to the Chartwell New Edinburgh Square Retirement Residence as well as the Bruyère Village Retirement Residence. This opportunity enabled me to speak with residents about their prior air travel experiences and where the potential pain points were along the journey. I was able to show them my aircraft scenarios, design concepts, and mock-ups, by engaging in participatory research.
Throughout my research, it was found that when travelling by air, a key area of concern for persons with dementia and their caregivers was aircraft lavatories.
Concept Exploration: Sketches & Use Scenarios
Creating scenarios of the air travel experience helped to better understand each step of the process and where potential pain points could be for an individual with dementia. I created scenarios that followed the entire process of being on an aircraft.
From this exercise, the main issues that were highlighted included;
the lack of space in the lavatory for two individuals
the confusion that could arise if an individual uses the lavatory by themselves (e.g. forgetting how to flush the toilet or turn the tap on)
not remembering to go to the washroom and having an accident
forgetting where the lavatory is on the aircraft and not remembering how to get back to their seat
